Mt. Baker Places Hike Heather Meadows, WA
Picture Lake
Summer–fall; snowshoe in winter
The Mt. Shuksan reflection shot — a 0.6-mile paved loop, genuinely stroller-friendly
This is the photo you’ve seen: Mt. Shuksan doubled in still water, shot from a 0.6-mile paved loop a few steps off the highway at Heather Meadows. With 45 feet of gain, it’s the one walk on this mountain we recommend to absolutely everyone — grandparents, toddlers, guests in the wrong shoes. Genuinely stroller-friendly is not a phrase we get to use often up here.
One correction we make constantly: there are no larches at Heather Meadows in October, whatever Pinterest suggests — for real larch stands you’re driving Highway 20. What this spot does have is a short season. Heather Meadows is a snowshoe zone from November through April, so treat this as a summer-and-fall stop. How it fits with the rest of the mountain is in our best hikes near Mt. Baker guide.
