Horseshoe Bend is the hike we send guests to when the calendar says no to everything else. It runs 2.4 miles along the North Fork Nooksack from a trailhead right on SR 542 near the Douglas Fir campground, and at 1,200 feet it stays passable in months when everything above Glacier is a snowfield. It’s mossy, loud with river noise, and canopied enough that rain barely reaches you.

That makes it the April and November answer, but it earns a spot in summer too — shade and river are a good trade on a warm afternoon, and this is the closest trailhead on our list to both cabins. Where it sits among the bigger days is laid out in our best hikes near Mt. Baker guide.

  • Trailhead: paved access on SR 542 near the Douglas Fir campground

  • Low elevation keeps it hikeable essentially all year
