Glacier Public Service Center

Stop here on your first morning up the highway. It’s the Forest Service ranger station at the west edge of Glacier, and it handles the two errands most Baker trips need: passes and straight answers. Inside they sell the full range of recreation passes (day, annual, senior, access, military, even the fourth-grade pass), and a self-service kiosk outside sells day passes 24/7 when the doors are closed. Headed into the North Cascades National Park backcountry? Those permits are issued here in person, Thursdays and Fridays only, June 25 through September 25.

The building itself is the sight. Civilian Conservation Corps crews from Camp Glacier built it in 1938 and faced it with columnar basalt quarried near Heather Meadows; it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980 and is still doing its original job, which is more than most historic buildings can say.

Hours are the catch. They run daily in summer and shrink in the off-season, and they change often enough that we won’t print them — call (360) 599-2714 or check the USFS page before a special trip.
